Bauchi health care agency holds orientation to 47 newly graduated Basic Midwives

Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA) has organized an orientation for the newly certified Basic Midwives so as to guide and equip them with some of those critical areas and introduce them to the practical issues regarding the profession.

The orientation was held at the Aliko Dangote College of Nursing and Midwifery, Bauchi with the objectives  to further strengthen and exposes the newly graduated skilled workers on how to adapt with real work protocols, with a skills that allow a Midwife to adjust to methods and plans when things change unexpectedly. 

The 3 day orientation program was primarily to encourage community sacrifices considering the nature of the responsibilities attached to the new profession, which a Midwife is likely to be flexible during various aspects of the roles.

It was also set to promote empathy in the practice where Midwives should have the ability to relate to their patient’s emotions and feelings, so that they can support a patient and build trust. 

This is because empathy is important during pregnancy and birth because it is an emotional experience for a family. 

Some of the key functions of Midwives are to provide full antenatal care, including parenting classes, clinical examinations and screening. 

It is also to Identify high-risk pregnancies, Monitor women and support them during labour and the birthing process as well as teach new and expectant mothers how to feed, care for and bathe their babies.

The 47 basic Midwives were drawn from College of Nursing and Midwifery, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi. 

They are expected to be absorbed by the state government in an effort to providing alternative for human resource gaps in the health sector. 

In attendance at the orientation were: Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Alhaji Ali Babayo, Director Nursing Services, MoH, Director Medical Services, Director Admin and Human Resource, Provost of ADCNM, partners Health Workforce Management, other staff from the Agency and the programme.
