Bauchi NUJ inaugurates committee to address challenges facing operations of state-owned media houses

Determined to bring succour to the ailing and dilapidated Bauchi state owned media houses, Bauchi state Television (BATV) and Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC), the leadership of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has inaugurated a five man committee to look at the problems militating against the progress of the media houses and suggest solutions.
State chairman of the NUJ, Umar Sa’idu who inaugurated the committee said that the idea to constitute the committee was in line with the NUJ’s determination to enhance excellence in journalism practice in the state.
He said that the two broadcast media have a lot of audience hence the need for the government to upgrade the stations to make them up to date.
Umar Sa’idu further explained that veterans journalists including the former Permanent Secretary, state ministry of information, Inuwa Bello, immediate former Managing Director of BATV Ibrahim Idris Shall, former General Manager Radio Nigeria Globe FM Bauchi Dahiru Garba Mohammed, a director in the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) Umar Shira and Fatima Abdullahi from ministry of information were selected to serve in the committee.
According to him, the terms of reference of the committee are to look at the challenges of the media houses and proffer recommendations on how to revamp the stations, improve their services, revenue generation as well as boost the capacity of their staff.
He stated that after the submission of the committee’s report, the NUJ would forward it to the state governor Bala Mohammed so that he could act on it.
In his acceptance remarks, Inuwa Bello commended the NUJ for constituting the committee saying that it is the right thing to do considering the level of dilapidation of the 2 organizations.
Inuwa Bello assured that the committee will work round the clock to bring out solutions to the problem militating against the smooth operations of the 2 state owned media houses particularly at this critical time when people particularly those at the remote areas need information, education and entertainment.
The Committee Chairman however pleaded that the 3 weeks mandate given to it may not be adequate saying that it may request for more time in order to do a thorough job.
