Mr. and Mrs. Philemon Yakubu at their wedding
By Akanji Alowolodu, Bauchi
A young man, Philemon Yakubu, on Saturday, 1st June 2024 got wedded to his beloved wife at a moderate ceremony conducted at the St. Matthew’s Barracks Church, School of Armoured at the Nigerian Army Barracks, Bauchi.
The ceremony was a unique one as the newly wedded groom in his first official speech as a married man, revealed that he found it so pretty difficult to approach the love of his life due to shyness.
He however chose to go to the Facebook App, searched for her, got her and proposed to her, being one of the Church members whom he has been in love with.
Yakubu, who got married in grand style said that he was intimidated by his wife’s physique thereby found it apprehensive to approach and propose marriage to her.
Speaking further, he said that, “We met at the Church. I have been seeing her. You know, when a man is looking for someone to settle down with, he talks to this girl and talks to that girl and then at the end of the day I felt those ones will not be suitable.”
According to him, “Even though it was somehow like I would not summon the courage to talk to her because of her nature and looking at me as one who has a small stature. Then I just summoned courage. I didn’t have the boldness in the first place.”
A very happy Yakubu said that, “I had to speak to her through Facebook. That’s how we got started. She wanted to do shakara, as God would have it, she accepted my proposal.”
He however stressed that he loves his wife because of so many things, pointing out that she’s a dedicated Sunday school teacher.
“I felt this woman is suitable for me because she will understand my children better and will know how to bring them up in a godly way,” he added.
He said that her beauty also attracted him saying that she’s all that he wanted. “Above all she is a God fearing woman.”
He also said that both of them enjoyed acceptance from their parents who they said are people that believe in the choice of the children, provided they love each other.
According to him, “Some will say you will have to marry your tribe, some will say you will have to go to this person. My parents supported my decision. When I brought her to them they accepted her.”
Also speaking, the bride, Mrs Philemon said that she almost rejected him due to her bitter experience from another man who broke up with her.
She said that, “I didn’t want to accept his proposal because he walked to me when I just came out of a relationship that didn’t work out. I felt ‘all men are the same’, let me not rush to make another mistake.”
According to her, “People encouraged me to walk onto him because he lacked the courage to propose to me. I said it is an abomination for an African woman to do that. He later proposed using Facebook and that is how we started.”
