Bauchi SWAN tasks members on professionalism in reporting sports events

Sports Writers in Bauchi state have been tasked on the need to be professionals in reporting sporting activities in the state by avoiding sensationalism and bias in their reportage.

The challenge was thrown by State Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Bauchi State Chapter, Mahmud Yakubu Muhammad during the opening ceremony of the Bauchi SWAN 2022 Inter-media sports competition week which was held at the NUJ Press center Bauchi on Monday.

According to him, the aim of the SWAN week was to foster cordial relationship among media practitioners via sports, adding that the week was also an avenue to create healthy competition through various games that will take place during the week.

The SWAN Chairman further said that the Association will be organizing trainings for Sports Writers in the state to keep them abreast with trends in the sporting world as well as enhancing their reporting skills in sports.

Mahmoud Mohammed also said that Journalists need to always exercise to stay healthy as it enhances the physical well being of individuals and promotes mental and psychological health.

According to him, “The health of our members and that of other journalists is very important, hence they need to be fit and mentally alert.Through sports, they will keep bodies healthy, thereby performing better in their jobs as media practitioners.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council, Comrade Umar Sa’idu said that Sports is no longer an entertainment or business but a force that unites Nigerians.

He commended media organizations in the state for promoting sporting activities through their reportage and encouraged them sustain the tempo.

In his speech, the  North-East Vice President of SWAN, Jibo Zakari urged Journalists especially Sports Journalists to be professional in reporting sporting activities by going for trainings that will enhance their productivity in the field of sports.

Represented by the North-East Zonal Secretary of SWAN, Nasiru Abdullahi Kobi, Jibo Zakari said that the Associations will soon organize a North-East SWAN competition that will further unite media practitioners in the zone.

Director of Sports, Bauchi Sports Commission, Lawan Garba appreciated the positive contribution of Sports Writers to sports development of the state stressing that sports administrators and sports writers are partners in progress. 

He assured that the Sports Commission will continue to partner SWAN for sustainable development of the sports sector of the state urging to always approach him for clarifications on sports issues.
