Bishop Julius Yakubu Kundi of the Kafanchan Diocese delivered a powerful message of resilience at the funeral Mass for Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, a Priest brutally murdered on Ash Wednesday.
In a homily on March 14, 2025, Bishop Kundi declared, “We will not retreat; we will continue with the light of Christ until the work of Satan comes under the light of Christ.”
The Bishop’s words, delivered in the face of ongoing persecution and violence targeting Christians in northern Nigeria, resonated deeply with the large congregation.
Fr. Sylvester’s murder shocked the Diocese, yet Bishop Kundi’s message urged steadfast faith.
The funeral Mass, attended by Bishop John Niyiring of the Kano Diocese, was a solemn occasion marked by both grief and unwavering commitment.
Bishop Kundi linked the tragedy to the significance of Ash Wednesday, emphasizing mortality and repentance in light of Fr. Sylvester’s death.
Despite the sorrow, Bishop Kundi emphasized hope and faith. Priests, religious leaders, and lay faithful from within and surrounding dioceses gathered in solidarity, demonstrating the strength of the community.
The tragedy in Kafanchan is a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis. The recent kidnapping and death of seminarian Peter Andrew in Auchi further highlight the dangers faced by clergy and the broader Nigerian population.
