Bishops visit police station attacked by robbers
By Akpan David, Calabar
Bishops of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star have paid a visited the Divisional Police headquarters in Okundi, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, which was repeatedly attacked and vandalized by suspected criminals.
The clergymen called at the police station to sympathise with the police personnel over the attack, brief the DPO about their weekend humanitarian, evangelical activities and retreat in Okundi town.
The station was reportedly attacked, at least, two times in the last two years, according to the DPO, Mr Iwara Stephen Arikpo.
He confirmed that when his predecessor was in office, the suspects had invaded the station more than twice and carted away many valuables, including arms, equipment and attacked personnel on duty.
He explained that when he took over he saw that the office was bare as a result of the robbery attacks.
He disclosed that he had to embark on the projects of repairing damaged doors, windows, replacing office equipment and restoring electricity.
Arikpo lamented that upon fixing the damaged or stolen equipment, he has been transferred to head the Bakassi division.
“I am not regretting that I have been officially moved away from Okundi though. I’ve spent one year and half here. Somebody else has come to take over from me. But I have to say it that God has used me to fix most of the stolen or damaged items by the robbers who invaded this divisional headquarters to make the office a bit more habitable for personnel. When it rained, the water would usually splashed into our offices. There was no electric power. All those I have fixed them all.
“Next week, I will also travel to Bakassi, my new station, to also sign documents to take over that divisional headquarters.”
He expressed happiness for the visit of the priests, and their prayers over further attacks and and alleged evil forces.
Speaking, many of the clergymen commiserated with the DPO, called on the DPO and his personnel to have fervent faith in the Almighty God.
Commending the DPO for his good works, restoring confidence in the personnel and re-equiping the office, head of the Cross River State Bishops’ Forum in the state, Archbishop Barnabas Ngozi Ogbonna disclosed that the spiritual leader of his organization, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu mandated them to visit the station with words of encouragement.
He assured him of cooperation and regular visits to the station by the Bishops’ forum, encouraging him to depend on and have confidence in the Lord.
Ogbonna declared that the robbers and vandals will no longer attack them anymore.
