The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, has flagged off distribution of 300 tons of fertilizers to farmers to signify the commencement of agricultural activities this farming season across the state.
He said that, the early distribution of the fertilizer was to delibrately  planned to coincide with farmers’ planting period of the month of July.
Governor Babagana Zulum, who was represented by his deputy at the flag-off ceremony held at the weekend in Kwaya Kusar, disclosed that, “To ensure a hitch free distribution exercise, a monitoring distribution  panel; has been set up,” noting that this will prevent the diversion of the commodity to targeted farmers in the 27 Local Government Areas of the state.
According to him,180 trucks of fertilizer (300 tons) were earmarked for distribution to farmers to boost agricultural production during the season.
Giving the  breakdown of distribution, the Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Bukar Talba, disclosed that 180 trucks would be distributed to nine councils in the south senatorial districts with each local council area is to receive 10 trucks for its farmers.
And that, the central and northern  senatorial districts, were allocated 40 and 50 trucks for distribution in eight and 10  local councils of the state, respectively.
The deputy governor expressed the administration’s determined not only to raise farmers’ productivity, but in line with the 10-point development agenda of Governor Zulum stressing that, the distribution of the fertilizer will also enhance living conditions of rural farmers that constitute the majority population of the electorates.
He noted that fertilizer is one of the most important farming input to improve agricultural production as local manure was grossly inadequate to meet farmers’ demands.
“It’s therefore, necessary to provide agricultural inputs to farmers at the right time and at an affordable price,” noting that it will enhance high yields and productivity.
Government, he said, will ensure that land is available for agriculture expansion across the state, while the hard to reach areas as a result of insecurity, are being accessed by farmers for agricultural expansion. “Food sufficiency is the major catalyst for security and prosperity and this administration will ensure that all the requisite requirements for bumper harvest are provided,” he said.
Kadafur therefore; solicited for the co-operation and support of farmers so that
government succeeds in its overall development plan for the state and pledged to procure other agricultural inputs, including tractors, water pumps and pesticides to prevent pre and post-harvest losses.
