Borno NDLEA arrests 462 for drug offences

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), Borno State Command, has arrested a total of 462 suspects comprising of 439 men and 23 women for dealing in illicit drug related offences between January and December 2019.
Also about 481.097kg of assorted illicit substances were seized and withdrawn from circulation.
This was contained in a press release signed and issued by state NDLEA Commander, Joseph Icha and made available to the media, highlighting the 2019 score card of the command.
He said 11 suspects have since been convicted while 64 cases are still pending before the federal high court Maiduguri and the age of the suspects range between 16 and 45 years.
A breakdown of the illicit drugs confiscated included, cannabis sativa 327.294kg, cocaine 448.7 grammes, heroine 250.72 grammes and psychotropic substances 100.637kg.
The NDLEA Commander explained that within the period under review, the command arrested and charged to court some notorious drug barons just as efforts are ongoing to track down all drug
dealers and distributors in the state.
The Commander further said that he has deployed intelligence led approaches
in the handling of the control of illicit supply of hard drugs and simultaneously applying evidence-based preventive strategies in drug demand reduction
efforts.
Other activities embarked upon by the command within the year under review were,drug abuse preventive
education to schools and tertiary institutions in the state as well as sensitization campaigns to several internally displaced persons camps.
Also, he hinted that, 262 drug users were
counselled with 14 persons admitted into resident counselling and have since been handed over to their family.
Icha seized the opportunity to commend the Borno State Government under, Professor Babagana Zulum, for his unwavering support in the fight against drug abuse in the state and sister agencies operating in the state,for their tremendous support.
