A one-time renowned boxer and coach, better known as “The Golden Gloves” during his heydays, Obisia Nwakpa will soon be rehabilitated by his home government, Abia State.
Nwakpa disclosed this during a telephone chat, adding that he had to his state government few months ago about his current situation and desire to renovate his dilapidated house in his home community and requested for government supports.
According to him, though the government has since replied to his letter but he was yet to meet with them to know the extent of their rehabilitation proposal.
The former challenger for the World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight title against Saul Manny in the 1980s lavished praises on the erstwhile government of late Sam Mbakwe and the current Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s, saying they usually remembered him for bringing glory and fame to the state.
“I am still residing in Lagos State. But I needed to refurbish my house in my village because it completely went bad. I wrote to the state government for support and rehabilitation so that I can have where to put up when I return home.
“They responded to the letter. But we are yet to formally meet. They have been good with me anyway since the time of Mbakwe. The present one, too, is also a good man”, he said.
He said many of his contemporaries have gone or are on sick beds but that God has been good to him in terms of good health
