The Calabar Cancer Registry has donated drugs to an indigent patient in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

The drugs alongside other consumables were to support the poor patient as a way of marking World Cancel Day in the state.

There are reports that as a result of high costs of cancer drugs, many cancer patients have been unable to access drugs and treatments.

Consultant pathologist and director of the Registry, Prof Imaobong Ekanem led other officials to visit the poor patient, suffering from breast cancer, whose name can not be disclosed.

It is understood that the University also helped to subsidise the cost of the cancer drugs.

The Registry also made donations of toiletries and food items to assist other indigent cancer patients.

Prof Ekanem said, “For this year, we are marking the cancer week low keyed. High point of our activities today was our visit to cancer patients.

“A particular one is 42 year old female cancer patient who is indigent.

“The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital authorities kindly permited us and even subsidisee for the cancer drugs which are quite expensive.

“We purchased some of the drugs for her after her surgery today.

“You know, the theme for this year’s celebration is Close The Gap. So we tried to close the gap by extending supports of drugs to her since it has been difficult for her to procure them.”

To prevent cancer, she encouraged healthy and nutritious diet, rich in fresh fruits such as fruit salad as recipe.

She said rich fruits salad is loaded with antioxidants found in Vitamin A, C and E.
