The Ambo community in Calabar South Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State is set to benefit from a free 24-hour supply of solar-powered electricity.
This follows the completion of the first phase of a solar power project designed to address the longstanding power outages in the neighborhood.
The newly installed system will generate 245 kW, providing electricity to the Ambo and part of Mbukpa areas of Calabar South LGA, including the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star (BCS) World Headquarters.
Speaking with journalists in Calabar, Justice Osai Ahiakwo, the legal consultant for the project, revealed that the initiative is part of a green energy revolution spearheaded by the spiritual leader of BCS, His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu.
He stated that the project has cost several hundred million naira so far.
According to Ahiakwo, the installation is being executed in three phases, with a target of generating a total over 300 kW to alleviate the electricity challenges faced by the Ambo community, with a population of over 15,000 people.
He explained that the system comprises a three-phase solar power setup, including inverters, lithium batteries, and high-quality cables manufactured by a Chinese firm in compliance with specifications set by the BCS technical committee.
“The persistent power challenges affecting the Ambo community, including the BCS headquarters, have now been effectively addressed,” Ahiakwo said.
“This project will significantly reduce the financial burden of electricity bills on residents. The installation was completed within the stipulated contract duration of 60 days, without any extensions.”
He further disclosed that Chinese experts traveled to Nigeria to oversee the installation process, ensuring that the imported components were properly integrated into the system.
Ahiakwo emphasized that the contractual agreement between the parties was governed by Nigerian laws, and all obligations have been met. The 245 kW solar power installation is now set for commissioning during the Easter festival.
