Children’s Day: Child rights activists call for greater protection for children
By Akpan David, Calabar
Three prominent children protection dignitaries have called on the authorities in Nigeria to provide greater protection and security for Nigerian children.
According to them, Nigerian children are becoming vulnerable to terrorism, rituals, trafficking and sexual violations.
They spoke on the backdrop of Children’s Day celebration, 27 May 2025, emphasizing that official legislation must be enacted to ensure greater protection of children against violations, trafficking and mistreatment.
In an exclusive interview, Mrs Glory Mike Ntuk, former state secretary of Child Protection Network called on parents to devote more attention to care for their children and wards.
“Children need love and freedom. They want to feel free. Today being children’s day, they want to see the outside world and be happy. Parents should always try to make their children and ward happy by giving them gifts. But parents should endeavour to follow up with them. Parents must protect their children, not allowing them to be totally free to do whatever they feel like. The world is wicked. Parents must teach and show them the dangers of life…”
Also appealing for state protection for children, matron of Mother Elizabeth Redeemed Children Home in Calabar, Anne Odudu Charles emphasised that children should be raised in a protective environment.
She said, “Children are gifts from God. As such they are to be taken care of, nurtured and raised them in a secured environment, in order to foster every child’s ambition as future leaders.”
A clergyman and child protection activist, Archbishop Sunday Udoffia called on Nigerian authorities to prioritize the welfare of the children in all their plannings.
Udoffia advised that the education sector should given attention and funded adequately, reiterating that children are the leaders of today.
