The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has lauded the efforts of security agencies in the state, attributing the massive return of Ndi Anambra during the recent Christmas festivities to their commitment and vigilance.
Governor Soludo praised officers of the Armed Forces and other security operatives for creating a safe and secure environment that encouraged residents and indigenes to return home in large numbers during the festive period.
He noted that their tireless dedication played a significant role in restoring public confidence and maintaining peace across the State.
The Governor made the remarks while worshipping at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, during a special Thanksgiving Mass held to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. According to his Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, the Mass was officiated by the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor.
Governor Soludo acknowledged the sacrifices of security personnel, stressing that while citizens sleep, the men and women responsible for their safety remain on duty.
He assured them of the State government’s continued support, subject to available resources.
Reflecting on the region’s security challenges, the Governor lamented the loss of innocent lives to criminal elements and domestic terrorists operating from forests and remote areas.
However, he commended the Federal Government for officially designating kidnappers and violent criminal gangs as terrorists, describing them as the greatest threat to peace and security in the South-East.
He also highlighted the historical significance of the occasion, noting that January 15 marks the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.
According to him, the day calls for sober reflection and remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price for the nation.
“Today, we remember not only those who lost their lives during the civil war, but also all servicemen and women who died in the line of duty in service to our fatherland,” the Governor said.
In his sermon, Bishop Ezeokafor drew a parallel between military service and the Sacrament of Baptism, explaining that both are rooted in selfless service and the preservation of life. He urged government officials and citizens alike to shun self-centeredness and embrace collective responsibility for peace, unity, and development.
The solemn Mass was attended by senior government officials, veteran military officers, and families of fallen heroes, serving as a reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by members of the Nigerian Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity.
