By Akanji Alowolodu, Bauchi
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has described as a critical stakeholder and the lead agency in disaster management, preparedness, mitigation, rehabilitation and resettlement of victims of emergency situations.
The Corps is said to have carried out a lot of operations and setup structures in line with the discharge of its functions just as it has been involved in the protection of IDPs in the North-East and other parts of the country, providing security for liberated towns in guaranteeing the safe return of displaced inhabitants, provide COVID-19 awareness campaigns as well as establishment of peace clinics to settle crisis that could lead to court cases through Alternative Dispute resolution (ADR) mechanism
The assertion was made by the Bauchi State Commandant of the NSCDC, Nuraddeen Abdullahi while speaking on Tuesday during the celebration of the 2022 International Civil Defence Day (ICDO) with the theme:’DEFENCE AND MANAGEMENT OF DISPLACED POPULATIONS IN THE FACE OF DISASTERS AND CRISES; ROLE OF VOLUNTEERS AND THE FIGHT AGAINST PANDEMICS’
He explained that the world Civil Defence Day is a day set aside by the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO) with the aim of bringing to the attention of the world the importance of civil protection and of raising awareness of the preparedness against accidents or disasters, and to also pay tribute to the efforts, sacrifices and accomplishments of all the national services responsible for the fight against disaster.
He added that the end of the year 2019 was marked by the arrival of the coronavirus, which has evolved in several successive forms, causing despair within human communities due to its virulence and in the sphere of decision making, a certain vehemence due to the rapid search for solutions to a problem whose contours are not all clear but against which we have the duty to protect populations.
The impact of the pandemic should not allow Nigerians to forget the suffering of populations in the face of crises and of other kinds.
The NSCDC Commandant added that under these circumstances, the ICDO invites Civil Defence actors to focus on the involvement of volunteers in the prevention of the displacement of people, and in providing care to internally displaced persons and refugees in a context of pandemic and other humanitarian crises.
According to him, “The mobilization of volunteers for disaster risk management is recommended at all levels of the society. This is more so the case, in the prevention phase, in environments that bring together people on a continuous basis such as schools, markets, hospitals etc. in all cases, whether in risk prevention or disaster response, volunteering must be taken into account in National, Sectoral or Specific Response plans”.
“In view of the above, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps is calling on the good citizens of the country to join hands in order to form a strong and united Civil Defence that would stamp out crimes and other vices in the society”, he streesed.
He expressed that, “The Bauchi State Command of NSCDC under my watch, is not left out, the command is constantly participating in rescue operations during emergencies and assisting the displaced population in collaboration with other stakeholders in disaster management” .
He lamented that Farmer-Herders clash is one area that the Command is now focusing its attention towards ensuring that lost of lives through farmer-herders conflicts as well as safeguarding the AgroAllied investment in order to boost agriculture in the State and guarantee sufficient food production agenda of the present administration is achieved.
