A member of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Buba-Yakub (APC-Adamawa) has called for increased sensitisation in local languages to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
Buba-Yakub, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja said there is need to activate all information dissemination mechanisms in the major indigenous languages for increased awareness on the pandemic.
The lawmaker who represents Gombi/ Hong Federal Constituency of Adamawa also urged Muslim faithful across the country to use the month of Ramadan to pray for Allah’s forgiveness and for an end to the pandemic.
He also called for increased vigilance around the border towns in Adamawa following the discovery of an index case of the disease in the state.
“As would be expected, I am today saddened by the fact that what we dreaded in my state about the Novel Coronavirus outbreak across the country has finally happened.
“Just yesterday the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported an index case of the disease in our state, Adamawa.
“Gladly, however, let me be quick to also add here that it is now time for all the preparations we have made these past weeks to come into play, we have come to the stage of implementation.
”I therefore, call for more awareness and sensitisation campaigns to avoid spreading the disease further in our communities.
”We must, therefore, step up all activities now to get our people fully and continuously informed on what to do to stay safe and free of the virus and avoid community spread,” he said.
The lawmaker directed members of the Hon. Yusuf Captain Buba Coronavirus Trust Fund to increase the frequency of sensitisation activities on local broadcast media in local languages.
Buba-Yakub, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs, called on the public to support all initiatives and guidelines of governments at all levels aimed at stemming the rising tide of the virus. (NAN)
