The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Dr Peter Odey, has assured organisers of the Agbokim Falls Marathon of full government backing to ensure the success of the second edition of the event.

He gave the assurance when the marathon’s organisers paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Calabar.

Odey said the Governor Bassey Otu administration remains committed to boosting the economy and conserving the environment through the twin drivers of sports and ecotourism.

According to him, “Sports ecotourism is a vital tool for driving inclusive development and promoting environmental sustainability.”

He noted that agriculture, tourism, and sports development are key pillars of the government’s People First agenda, adding that events such as the Agbokim Falls Marathon align perfectly with those priorities.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Creative Associates, Mr Emem Udominyang, commended the state government for its investment in sports across local government areas and its partnership in the upcoming race.

He said the 2025 edition, themed “From Conference Rooms and Highways to Forest Communities and Sanctuaries,” will deepen local content by featuring a special segment for community athletes to encourage grassroots participation and talent discovery.

In his remarks, Mr Clement Umina, former Managing Director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau, disclosed that the 42km race will cover three tracks from Ikom through Ajassor to Agbokim.

He said this year’s marathon would focus on biodiversity conservation, stressing that “each kilometer we run brings us closer to saving our planet and humanity.”

Umina added that side attractions will include exhibitions, symposiums, cultural tours, a gala night, and the presentation of prizes and awards.
