Cross River Government, NGO harp on essence of family planning, self-care

Importance of family planning and self care have again been re-echoed by the Director of Public Health in Cross River State, Dr Bassey Offor and the Social and Behavioural Change Communication officer of DISC programme, Emem Effiong-Ebule
Both collaborated to sensitise rural folks as well as medical assistants on ways to consolidate on achievements made in entrenching family values and planning to enable them properly care for the number of children they have in the face of current economic realities.
At the workshop sponsored by Society for Family Health, federal and state health agencies, Cross River government commended the initiative of building capacity of Health Assistants to help in teaching importance of self care modalities.
Offor assured that government will provide an enabling environment at the community levels through its facilities and manpower to guide them at the right direction.
Explaining, Emem Effiong-Ebule said that Self Care is the way to go in reproductive life and primary healthcare.
She maintained that building capacity of providers helps the people to overcome their fears to self inject.
In a presentation, she listed that the health assistants will use the mass media, including the social media as well as other local means to sensitize the people on how to handle issues of family planning methods.
Festus Edet of Society for Family Health said the project aimed to build capacity of Health Assistants to enable families handle issues of family planning.
He appealed to state government to take over, sustain sensitization on family planning and self care and train train providers on Delivering Innovations in Self-Care empathy counseling skills.
