We The People read open letter to Cross River State Governor-elect, Prince Bassey Otu on strategies to reinvent forests

In the eight years that Prof Benedict Ayade has governed, Cross River State has lost a minimum of $200million from the United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation programme.
Mr Odigha Odigha, former chairman of Cross River State Forestry Commission who won an international Goldman environmental prize for Africa award in 2003 for his forestry conservation efforts, disclosed this when an NGO, ‘We The People’ read an open letter to incoming governor of the state, Prince Bassey Otu.
The letter had the theme: strategies for protecting the vast Cross River forests and reversing the negative trends of wanton devastation.
Odigha, whose time the state earned carbon credits from forest conservation running close to $10 million, said since the coming of Governor Ayade the state’s efforts on carbon marketing and conservation stopped.
“As a result, I can say authoritatively that Cross River State which was highly regarded by the United Nations and rated number one in Africa in the area of forest protection and carbon credits, has lost $200 million from the UN-REDD+ programme at the minimum in the last eight years of Ayade’s administration.”
He said during the tenure of Mr Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke, carbon credits earned from the UN-REDD programme extensively boosted the state revenue.
“Unfortunately, from 2015 our forests have been clear-felled because the current government gives prominent backing to armed criminals and foreigners to bring down our trees.
“The government looked the other way as the forests were criminally plundered for selfish reasons.
“For 8 years, the last remaining rainforests in the world has been destroyed in Cross River State.
“We have cried, shouted and drawn attention to the disaster perpetrated in our forests in the last eight years.”
Odigha who is BoT chairman of NGO Coalition for Environment (NGOCE) said it was regrettable that there has been brazen raping of the vast forests without minding that there are state and international laws against such act.
