Cross River trains 5000 on skills acquisition

Five thousand youths have been listed for training in tailoring, welding, cake making, photography, driving, automobile repairs, repairs of gasoline generators, and other skills.
Most of the youths were enlisted from the southern senatorial district of the state.
This was disclosed at an event tagged Impact Youth Leadership Conference with a theme – Inspiring the next generation of leaders, organized by special Assistant to Governor Bassey Otu on youth mobilization for South, Comrade Ekpo Okon Tete.
He said that since next generation of leaders is not a distant reality, training them must deliberate and courageous.
He emphasized that young people must be given a chance, and should be well groomed a with good skills that will sustain their livelihoods.
Tete disclosed that his office had earlier trained 20 youths across the southern senatorial district.
“Empowerment of youths is a critical issue. There is need for significant investments in youths development in order for them to become useful citizens and skilled individuals.
“This is why 5000 youths are being enlisted for different skill trainings up till 2027 to make them comfortable and also become employers of labour.”
According to him, this effort will help to sustain the youth tomorrow.
Speaking, a Consultant at Neuro-Psychiatric hospital Calabar, Dr Theo Osim Onyuku cautioned them against wanton indulgence in drugs, disclosing that 80 per cent of inmates at their facility are youths.
He warned youths to focus on their education and skill acquisitions in order for their future to be assured.
He called on parents, guardians and government to deliberately discourage youths from drug abuse.
Other guest speakers also emphasised on importance of education, skills acquisition and need for young people to flee peer pressures and crimes.
