Civil Society Organizations, CSO, and Non-Governmental Organizations, NGO, with leanings on forest protection and environment have formed a body to mount pressures against wanton deforestation and banditry in Cross River State.

They rose from a meeting yesterday in Calabar and resolved to draw national and international attention to the plights of forest communities and the future generations about the rape and bandit activities in the forests spearheaded by powerful international cartels.

In a communique issued at the end of the consultative meeting,  Odey Oyama and one of those that signed the document, said Consensus of opinions among forest and mining stakeholders suggested that the body be called Coalition Against Illegal Logging and Mining Activities in Cross River State, (CAILAMA).

“We have formally consolidated ourselves into a coalition to address the specific issues of illegal logging and illegal mining in Cross River State.

“Consultations with members at the round-table led to the conclusion that they pull their resources and forces together to confront the bare faced raping of our forests resources.”

The group also resolved to employ legal strategies relevant to combat the prevailing wanton deforestation and degradation of the state’s forest resources, wildlife trafficking and other forestry crimes and offences .
