DG NIHSA supports policy to improve security beyond the Sahel region

The Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, participated in the inaugural international conference organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), themed “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024); Dissecting Nigeria’s Challenges – Genesis, Impact and Options.”

The conference which was held in Abuja convened a diverse group of experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to examine the complex challenges posed by insecurity in the Sahel region.

During the proceedings, former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), who chaired the occasion, highlighted the correlation between rising insecurity and issues such as poverty, unemployment, and weak governance.

He also pointed to climate change and environmental degradation as critical factors that have exacerbated the region’s instability.

General Abubakar commended NAN for organizing this essential dialogue, emphasizing that it would foster productive discussions aimed at addressing the pressing issues of insecurity.

The Chief Host, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the Bola Tinubu administration’s commitment to combatting insecurity through enhanced investments in equipment, manpower, and intelligence gathering.

He acknowledged the Sahel region’s status as a hotspot for instability, noting its impact on Nigeria, particularly through porous borders that facilitate violence, organized crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism.

Minister Idris stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies, international partners, and security experts to ensure Nigeria’s territorial integrity and contribute to lasting peace and stability in the Sahel.

The First Annual NAN International Lecture was attended by notable national and international figures, including Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas as the guest speaker.

President Bola Tinubu was represented by the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.
