BY SUNNY A. DAVID, AWKA
The newly posted Divisional Police Officer DPO to Central Police Station, Onitsha, Anambra State, Mr. Rabiu Garba (Chief Superintendent of Police) has started upgrading the Police Station detention facilities and the entire Police Station.
CSP Garba who left behind conducive detention facilities in his immediate past area of responsibility (Fegge Police Division) where suspects, particularly ones that have turned liability to their parents used to be angry when bail was granted to such suspects.
Our correspondent peep into Central Police Station Onitsha at the week, show some workmen carrying on some palliative jobs on the already decayed roof of the ancient Police Station, which has been left to its mercy by the predecessors of newly posted CSP Rabiu Garba.
Although many Police Officers accosted over the magic done by the DPO toward generating funds for the project, having declined to speak to our correspondent, the Police Station’s neighborhood that spoke under the condition of anonymity described the renovation of the decayed Station as a wonderful development.
Recall that while serving at the Fegge Police Division as the first Policeman, CSP Garba was second to none in the implementation of bail-is-free while many suspects who indulged in lighter crimes as a result of poverty were trained in skills acquisition of their choice and funded to start their own business by the DPO.
The residents within the jurisdiction of the Division want the DPO to replicate what he did at Fegge Police Station while in Central Police Station.
Also some of the residents who volunteered their views on the condition of anonymity prayed the DPO not start from where his immediate predecessor stop but should go beyond that, particularly in the area of crime fighting cum bursting.
The residents, Markets’ Union Leadership, and Vigilante Groups in the area have assured the DPO of their non-reserved support in the discharge of his duties
The Groups Urged him not to allow the detractors to have their way into him, as this, they say, might hinder the plan the DPO has for the citizens of the area.
They described the redeployment of CSP Rabiu Garba to the Central Police Station as a prayer answered by God.
A notable trader in one of the markets within the area (name withheld) said: “With Mr. Rabiu in CSP, the cases of snatching of phones, and other valuables, adding to the kidnapping of the innocent citizens in the area will be an old story.”
