There is palpable fear in Enugu Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State following the alleged killing of a young man, a barber apprentice, on Wednesday night.
The deceased was allegedly knocked down by a commercial shuttle bus while being chased by a policeman, one Okeke, described as a terror in the division. It was gathered that there are plans by youths to attack Nimo Divisional Police Station to avenge the death of their colleague.
There was also restriction of vehicular movement along the road, with bonfires everywhere. A resident of the area who identified himself as Kenneth said “the boy should be the only son of his mother.
He was killed last night while running from the police when he was returning from work. “I understand that Nimo Community wants the concerned policeman transferred. The police have mobilised since last night to ward off any attack.”
Another witness, who preferred anonymity said, “I was there when it all started unfolding. A police team was there too, firing shots into the air to scare the youths away but they remained adamant and the police scurried away.
“When I left the place, the youths were gathering used tyres.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident, but said the victim was an old man.
He said the situation has been brought under control by police operatives who were immediately mobilized to the scene.
“It was a fatal accident involving an elderly man. The youths had gone on rampage mistaken the deceased for one of them being pursued by the police.
“The elders of the community have been invited to a meeting with the Police to resolve the situation.”
