The Director, Eagles Academy, Aso Pada, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Dr. Alex Maiyanga, has expressed dismay over lack of proper framework for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative in Nigeria’s education sector.
He said, whereas, there is the Bank of Industry and Bank of Agriculture among others, the government has never deemed it necessary to have bank of education.
Dr. Maiyanga, who spoke to the media at the sidelines of Eagles Academy Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day, noted that the government hardly assist private initiative but seems to be even envious of private sector contribution to educational development.
He stressed that it is unfortunate that the government is not partnering in education with the private sector leaving them to raise capital from individual sweat.
Dr. Maiyanga pointed out that private schools rather than being helped receive numerous forms of taxes from various organizations even as some have become scammers.
According to him, the government should have formed a bank instead of establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme so that willing students can take loans.
He also spoke about the education policy of Finland where creativity and skills are emphasized rather stressing much on paper certification.
“The students are taught from the initial stage of their education to be creative, to innovate, to use skills rather building them for raw memory, to just regurgitate what they have been taught,” he pointed out.
He noted that Nigeria should learn and borrow from best practices around the world, even as the United States borrows from Finland saying that is the best way to go.
