Elder statesman, former Minister, Professor Jibrin Aminu dies at 85

A former Minister of Education and that of Petroleum, Professor Jibril Aminu has died at the age of 85 years.
He died on Thursday in Abuja after an illness.
His funeral prayer was held at the National Mosque in Abuja, after which his body would be flown to Yola and then to Song, his hometown in Adamawa State, for burial.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the funeral.
Others who attended the funeral prayers included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Special Adviser to the President on General Duties (Office of the Vice President), Dr. Aliyu Modibbo; former Secretary to the Federal Government, Yayale Ahmed and former Governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Nyako.
Also in attendance were former Governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje; former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; former Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman and former Minister of State for Health, Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong, among many others.
Aminu was born on 25th August, 1939 in Song Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
He had a long and respected career that touched various areas of national life.
Trained as a cardiologist, he graduated from the University of Ibadan in 1965 as the best medical student at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
He later earned a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London in 1972.
He was Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003 and represented Adamawa Central in the Senate from 2003 to 2011.
Earlier in his career, he served as Minister of Education and later as Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources between 1989 and 1992.
While as Petroleum Minister, he was President of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization, 1991 and President of the OPEC Conference from 1991–1992.
He was elected a delegate to the National Constitutional Conference from 1994–1995.
Aminu was twice married. His second wife is Fatima Bukar Mulima who gave him three children.
His divorced wife is Ladi Ahmed, who gave him six children. His sons Bashiru Aminu and Murtala Muhammad Aminu are economists and businessmen while his daughters work as lawyers (Nana Aminu) and dentists (Aminu Bello).
