Architect Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Hydrological Agency, (NIHSA) has disclosed that enhancing staff through training and retraining on the essential of team work is a bedrock for growth and development of the public sector in Nigeria

He made the statement at a four day capacity training with Pyramid Partners in Abuja.

According to him, “Section 7, sub-section 1(p) of the NIHSA (Establishment) Act, 2010, empowers NIHSA to carry out activities that are expedient for the full discharge of its functions in water resource management.

“In compliance with the NIHSA Act and in recognition of the need for team-spirit to boost productivity amongst the staff of the agency, recently collaborated with technical experts from Pyramid Partners to organise a four-day team-building programme for all staff of the agency, which spanned through the 3rd to 6th of December, 2024.

The purpose of the team training which took place at the head office of NIHSA in Abuja, was to enhance team-bonding amongst the staffers, in order to create a dynamic and formidable team vested with the capabilities of facilitating and supporting Nigeria’s water resource management through advanced hydrological service delivery.” He said

Architect Umar Mohammed Ibrahim said, the facilitators at the training, initiated several innovative indoor and outdoor sessions, which included group exercises, written tests, use of creative puzzles, brainstorming sessions, analytical reviews with field experts, and a whole lot more.

In his presentation, lead consultant from Pyramid Partners, Mr Farouk Abdullahi, highlights the staff on the differences between a team and a group, while emphasising the need for them to function as a team, in order to effectively accomplish the goals of the agency.

He said, “Not every group is a team. Team-building is a deliberate and intentional exercise in which the team studies its own process of working together and acts to create a work-climate that encourages and values the contributions of team members.

“Team-building is the process of enabling a group of people with the necessary skills to reach a common goal while evolving into a ‘cohesive unit’. A team is a work-group of people who have complementary skills and are committed to a common purpose, performance goal and approach, for which they are mutually accountable.

This means the team members must be able to ‘connect’ as a group of people with the same purpose. There must be an attachment between the team members and the group. If there is no connection, they won’t be mutually accountable.” He said.

The participants said they are happy with the training which was initiated by the new DG and they would improve on their zeal for nation building as a formidable team.
