Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas has greatly increased the scholarships being paid to medical students in the state with an upward review from N5,000 to N117,000.
A statement by the Taraba State Commissioner of Information and Re-orientation, Barrister Zainab Usman Jalingo says the decision by the Governor to upgrade the bursary of Medical Students in the State marks a major turning point in investment by the Government in critical health sector, widely regarded as one of the most impactful educational reforms in recent times.
“Prior to this intervention, medical students were subjected to grossly inadequate stipends, with preclinical students receiving ₦5,000 and clinical students ₦8,000, amounts that fell far short of the realities of medical training and living expenses,” the Commissioner lamented.
Zainab said with effect from January 2026, Governor Kefas approved a new, bursary framework of the Medical Students tied to the public Service Salary Scale where
Preclinical Medical Students are now placed on Grade Level 5 while the
Clinical Medical Students are now paid on Grade Level 7.
“This revised Structure has resulted in a significant increase, raising the bursary to as much as ₦117,000, thereby providing meaningful financial support to students undergoing the demand and resource-intensive Medical training,” the Commissioner noted.
She added that students, parents, and education stakeholders have praised Governor Kefas, describing the initiative as a bold, compassionate, and visionary step that eased financial burdens, boosts morale, and encouraged academic excellence among future healthcare professionals in the State.
She said the policy not only supports students and reduced the long-term challenges in healthcare system of Taraba State but also motivates and enhances the production of homegrown medical professionals.
“With this decisive action, Governor Agbu Kefas has once again demonstrated that this administration prioritizes education, values excellence, and is committed to building a healthier and more prosperous Taraba State,” Barrister Zainab added.
