Marking this year’s World Red Cross Day, the Anambra State Chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, led by its Chairman, Prof. Charity Ifeyinwa Emelie, has extended a helping hand to hundreds of vulnerable households in the state, providing them with food and other essential items, in a gesture of love and compassion.
Sixty one thousand naira cash were also distributed to 1,500 households while houses were renovated for flood affected victims in Ogbaru, Anambra East and West council areas of Anambra State.
Prof. Emelie who disclosed this during a media parly with journalists at the Red Cross Headquarters Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area of the State also noted that Red Cross Society
distributed non food items such as hygiene kits, farmer’s kit, and shelter kits to victims of flood in five Local Government Areas.
She further hinted that Nigerian Red Cross and Crescent Movement Anambra remains the first responder to every emergency with a strategic and professional approach to every situation adding that they don’t hesitate in assessing situations like food, danger and level of vulnerability within Anambra communities.
“We also drilled and reactivated water projects in Ogbaru, Anambra East, West and contributes a lot in promotion of hygiene in schools and communities through WASH programme,” she said.
Speaking on the theme of the 2024 Red Cross Day, “Keeping Humanity Alive” which she described as apt, she noted that the 2024 theme is a cumulative appraisal of the entire activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in a precise and concise format, stressing that the theme is in line with the mandate and operations of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
“We provide relief in times of disasters and emergencies, we reconnect families separated by crises, we help to rebuild communities devastated by disasters, we promote health and care of the vulnerable people and communities, and we prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found,” she stressed.
She equally used the opportunity to appeal to the State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo for maximum support especially on the areas they have challenges which includes functional vehicles, clinics, unavailability of pipe borne water in their offices among others.
