The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Onitsha, Dr. Mercy Anugwu, has formally inaugurated the hospital’s Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (CEmONC) team, describing it as a major step toward strengthening emergency maternal and newborn healthcare services at the facility.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Anugwu urged members of the newly constituted team to demonstrate professionalism, dedication, and strong teamwork in fulfilling their mandate. She reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing high quality, efficient, and life saving services to the public.

Dr. Anugwu recalled that the 2022 upgrade of Onitsha General Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre marked a major turning point, bringing increased funding, modern equipment, and additional specialist consultants to the institution. According to her, these improvements have significantly enhanced the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare.

She emphasized that the creation of the CEmONC team would be instrumental in reducing maternal and infant mortality in Anambra State. “Your core duty is to offer comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care. Ensure that every patient receives timely, safe, and effective treatment. Work as a united team and always prioritize patient safety,” she charged.

The CMD also highlighted the importance of ongoing medical training, collaboration, and research, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to make a meaningful impact. “With the authority vested in me, I hereby inaugurate this great CEmONC team,” she declared.

The Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Thyword Agu, also addressed the gathering, urging the team to uphold the hospital’s values while working tirelessly to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths. He noted that the CEmONC initiative would ensure that comprehensive maternal healthcare services are accessible to all, including indigent patients, thanks to Federal Government support.

Similarly, the Director of Administration, Barrister Caleb Ihuoma, applauded the leadership strides achieved under Dr. Anugwu and encouraged the team to justify the confidence placed in them by delivering exceptional care.

Responding on behalf of the team, CEmONC Chairman, Dr. Ekpelinwa, expressed gratitude for the trust bestowed upon them and assured hospital management of their unwavering commitment to delivering on their mandate.
