The Chairman, Rice Farmers Association in Bauchi State, Dr. Yahaya Adamu Yusuf, has called on the Federal and State governments to confront the concern of food insecurity in the country by veering into water management, particularly in rice production.
Dr Yusuf who made the call in an exclusive interview with our correspondent asserted that despite population explosion in Nigeria, farmers especially rice farmers can yet feed her by explorig the opportunities in water management.
He said, “The government should look at Agriculture Through Water management, let them continue to harvest a vast of water that is flowing every where during the wet season, so that in the dry season, we will use them to farm dry season farming in rice production”.
The Chairman cited a dam in Bauchi State that can be explored and its water harnessed for farming during dry season.
“We have Galala Dam in Warji Local Government Area with a vast water, but there is no carnal for farmers to use the water,” he said.
Despite the bid and expectation of farmers to produce 35,000 bags of rice this year, 2021, Dr. Yusuf believes that they will have better yields if adequate preparations is made to contend the odds of climate.
