Chukwu was the captain of the Green Eagles that won the African Nations Cup in 1980 in Lagos.

He reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday, though the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Chukwu had previously been the subject of widespread death rumors in 2021, which he publicly debunked during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4 of that year.

Reacting to the false reports at the time, he said: “I am terribly embarrassed by this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the story broke. I am still investigating the source of the rumor.”

Fondly referred to as “Chairman,” Chukwu was a towering figure in Nigerian football, earning respect and admiration both as a player and a coach.
