Foundation trains Journalists on Climate Reporting, Data story-telling
By Akpan David, Calabar
Some journalists in Cross River State have been trained in Calabar on Climate Reporting and Data storytelling.
The first ever training held over the weekend was done by Godshield Kanjal Journalism Foundation (GKJF) in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state.
Organizers say the training was occasioned by the underreported climate issues in the State, the south-south region, and the country in general.
Founder of the GKJF, Godshield Kanjal observed that participation of journalists in the state in climate reporting was negligible.
He therefore called them to see it as a very important beat in their tasks, adding their voices and participation were also critical to creating awareness of climate changes.

Kanjal revealed that there are many opportunities for journalists in the climate and environmental Journalism and urged them to, “take advantage of this training plus the experience and expertise in this job to solve societal and climate issues.”
The resource person, Solution Journalist and Deputy Editor at Prime Progress based in Abuja – Mr. Ogar Monday emphasized the need for journalists to add, express, and anchor their works based on data.
He said, “Always use data when doing your reports. Data connects your story to the global audience and gives it a human face.”
Monday said that using data in reporting is a way of showcasing facts in day-to-day journalism practice and best reporting.
He enjoined participants to be fully in the know of the current and developing facts backed up with data, tools, and research, to hold solid grounds when reporting their beats.
