The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has confirmed the conviction of four individuals involved in the vandalism of its facilities in Ebonyi State.

In a statement issued by the Group Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, and made available to our correspondent in Awka said that the company revealed that one of the convicts, Chukwuma Onwe, received a four-year prison sentence from Justice John Igboji of the Ebonyi State High Court, Ohaukwu Judicial Division, sitting in Ezzangbo. Onwe was convicted on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, damage, unlawful disconnection of transformer armoured cables, and theft.

The same court also sentenced Okefe Stanley, Aleke Kingsley, and Egba Friday to four years imprisonment each for vandalism, unlawful disconnection, and the removal of aluminium conductors belonging to EEDC.

According to Ezeh, the convicts were apprehended on June 5, 2023, by the Oshituma Community vigilante group in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

EEDC management expressed hope that the court’s verdicts would deter others from engaging in similar criminal acts.

Ezeh decried the persistent vandalism of the company’s network, noting that EEDC continues to channel scarce resources into repairing damaged infrastructure funds that could otherwise improve service delivery.

He urged customers and community members to remain alert and help protect electricity installations in their areas, warning that vandalism leads to service disruptions and avoidable inconvenience.
