From ‘sweet’ to ‘bitter’ prince: Cross River PDP chair says APC changed Governor Otu in just 2 years
By Akpan David, Calabar
The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has criticized Governor Bassey Otu, claiming that his time in the All Progressives Congress (APC) has significantly altered his leadership style and public persona.
In a recent interview, Ikem expressed disappointment in Governor Otu, who he described as unrecognizable from his days as a PDP Senator, when he was affectionately known as the “Sweet Prince.”
“APC has transformed Governor Bassey Otu from ‘Sweet Prince’ to ‘Bitter Prince’ in just two years,” Ikem said.
“It’s appalling. He has become almost inaccessible and detached. This is not the Otu we knew in the PDP.”
Ikem went on to imagine that the APC has a mysterious influence on politicians who join its ranks, changing their public perception and performance.
“This colossal failure is not the Senator Otu we once celebrated.
“There’s something about the APC that changes people—it’s not visible to the naked eye, but the effects are clear,” he added.
The PDP chairman also referenced former Governor Ben Ayade, alleging that his legacy and visibility declined significantly after he joined the APC.
“Just look at my brother, Prof Ben Ayade. All his shine in the PDP vanished after he left office while in the APC.
“Today, he’s barely seen or heard. Even the grammar is gone.”
Ikem’s remarks reflect the growing tension between the ruling and opposition parties in Cross River, as political narratives continue to evolve ahead of future elections.
