In an effort to curtail the alarming gender-base Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative has engaged journalists in Adamawa State in a 4-day training.
In a welcome address, Spotlight Initiative Communications Coordinator (UNICEF), Khadijah Ibrahim Nuhu said the rising cases of VAWG is alarming and needs all stakeholders to come together and proffer solutions to it.
Nuhu noted that the four-day session will offer journalists and other stakeholders the opportunity to bring the best solutions to resolving the menace which is barbaric and unacceptable in modern society.
She pointed out that goals 5 and 16 of Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) are primarily concerned with VAWG noting that Spotlight initiative will continue to champion the rights of these vulnerable members of the society because their rights as members of the society is of paramount importance.
Speaking earlier, Adamawa State Commissioner of Women Affairs, Hajiya Lami Ahmad urged media practitioners to avoid writing reports that may lead to the stigmatization of VAWG survivors.
The commissioner who is represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Saso Benson Ali, expressed concern over the ways some journalists report issues of violence against women and girls in a manner that further exposed the victims to stigmatization capable of discouraging them from opening up whenever they are assaulted.
Ahmad said the workshop is coming at a right time when cases of violence against women and girls is increasing across the globe hence the need for journalists to intensify more efforts in exposing violence against women in a diligent manner that will bring the menace to an end.
The Commissioner commended EU/UN for the initiative and tireless efforts and commitments to tackle the challenges and other humanitarian interventions which continues to bring succour to the people and assured them of state government readiness to always partner with them in the implementation of their programmes for the benefits of humanity.
