The EU-UN Spotlight Initiative says governments should recognise traditional institution in order to fast-track the elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in Nigeria.
A Spotlight Initiative Communications Coordinator at UNICEF, Khadija Nuhu made the plea in Yola at the end of 4-day training media practitioners organized by Spotlight Initiative with support from European Union and United Nations.
According to her, traditional rulers are doing their best to sensitize their subjects on VAWG adding that the gesture needs to be reciprocated through more support.
“The traditional leaders are doing their best and we want them to double their efforts, especially on prevention of VAWG from happening.”
She added that “Governments also need to come in and support them to do more so as to eliminate VAWG in the society.”
Nuhu advised that the traditional leaders and parents to report such cases to the relevant authorities for the survivors to be taken care of and action to take for perpetrators to serve as deterrent to others.
She noted that the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative is in Adamawa for dialogue with media practitioners on ethical reporting, advocacy and solutions journalism to eliminate VAWG.
Nuhu added that similar dialogue was conducted in Abuja, Cross River and Sokoto states all to help eliminate VAWG in the country.
She further stated that in every nine women, one was sexually violated hence the need for stakeholders to help in eliminating VAWG.
