Gombe sports writers elect new leaders

The Gombe State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN)  has elected new leadership to run the affairs of the chapter for the next three years.

The election, conducted in Gombe Tuesday, produced Mr.Mark Malele as Chairman. Others elected are William Attah of Daily Independent Secretary, Rabilu Abubakar of Aminiya/Daily Trust Newspaper as Treasurer and Esther Yusuf Lakama as Financial Secretary.

While inaugurating the new executive shortly after there declaration by the State SWANECO Chairman, the National Vice-President in charge of North-East zone of the Association, Mr Ahmed Amshi Kagana, in company of the National Ex-Officio, Mr. Usman Shehu, congratulated them on their well-deserved election and assured them and the entire SWAN family in Gombe of the National President’s support always. He called on them to keep their doors open for new qualified members to come in.

While commending the immediate past exco and the SWANECO for organizing a peaceful, successful and rancour free election despite attempts by some none members of SWAN in the state to polarise the association in recent past, the Vice President charged the new leadership to practice and lead according to the ethics of the profession.
The Gombe State Commissioner Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Adamu Inuwa Ibrahim, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Modi  Shelpidi, congratulated the new executives and pledged to solidly stand by them.

He charged the new leadership to justify the confidence reposed on them by ensuring that SWAN publicize sporting activities that is being promoted by Government and private individuals.

He assured that henceforth SWAN in Gombe will be included in every budget of any sports activities in and outside the state to encourage wider publicity considering sports as media event.

Speaking earlier, the immediate past Chairman of the chapter, Mohammed Halilu Teli, thanked members for supporting and actively reporting sports activities in the state, noting that the journey was full of challenges.

Teli commended Gombe State Government under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya who stood firm and supported the Association when attempts were made to hijack the association from practicing and professional sports journalists in the state.

Teli commended the SWANECO members for a job well done and particularly appreciate the role played by the Director-General of Press to Gombe State Governor for ensuring the success of Gombe SWAN.

In his acceptance speech, the new SWAN Chairman, Mr. Malele, who is a renowned Sports presenter and promoter, described the election of the new executive as a big opportunity to serve Gombe and the sporting world in general.

He assured that SWAN will work with all sports stakeholders in and out  the state promising that, “we are not going to shut our doors to any member who is qualified to be part of Gombe SWAN”.
