Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has been asked to work for the immediate release of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
An activist and chairman of Ohazurume Ndi Abia, Chief Arinze Igbaniuka, who made the call in Onitsha, Anambra State, said that as the Governor of Kanu’s State, Otti should as a matter of urgency initiate and be in forefront in mobilising other South East Governors, political leaders and stakeholders in the zone to work for the release of the IPOB leader.
Igbaniuka said this has become imperative to stabilise the Insecurity in the South East and allow for the socio-economic development of the zone.
The Sit -At -Home ordered by the leadership every Monday according to experts has had negative socio-economic impact on the zone.
There have however been series of moves by prominent Igbo leaders, Chief among them was the First Republic Aviation Minister, Late Chief Mbazulike Amechi, who met former President Muhammadu Buhari, to release Kanu to him but the former President insisted that the law should be allowed to take its full course.
Since then, the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal had freed Kanu but the Federal Government refused to release him and filed an appeal at Supreme Court which has been dragging, while Kanu remained incacerated at the facilities of the Department of State Security (DSS).
But Chief Igbaniuka was optimistic that if Gov.Otti, other South East Governors and stakeholders join hands in the demand for Kanu to be released, it would definitely yield result.
He lauded Gov.Otti for his determination to develop Abia State in a hurry which he has shown by commissioning three roads In Aba,the State economic nerve centre.
“That is why we heralded his election by hosting his swearing in here in Onitsha with fanfare with Ndi Abia.We believe he will do well. He has the heart to address the sufferings of Abia people since 1999″said Igbaniuka.
He said bad road was the number one problem of Abia State, followed by powering Abia communities and providing adequate security.
Igbaniuka called on the Abians to join hands in support of Otti to ensure his determination for faster development of the state is achieved, saying :”I am glad he has started well with road reconstruction, which other past Governors failed. I urge him not to slack”.
