Gunmen kill NG-CARES senior official in Lafia

Gunmen believed to be kidnappers, on Wednesday night, stormed the resident of an NG-CARES programme official in Angwan Mai Matasa in the Lafia local government area of Nasarawa State and murdered, Mr. Hassan Yahaya-Egwa.

Findings by our correspondent indicated that yet to be identified kidnappers who invaded the personal residence of the deseased situated around project quarters in Lafia the state capital came in their numbers and started shooting sporadically into the air to scare the residents of the area before they carried out their neferious act.

Investigation by our correspondent further revealed that a Facebook user, Anas Dansulaiman Giza confirmed the ugly development on his Facebook page on Wednesday in Lafia, the state capital.

His words, “The deseased was killed on Wednesday night at about 2:am at his new residence in the Angwan Mai Matasa area of Lafia metropolis.”

However, our correspondent also reports that the victim has been buried as according to Islamic rites.

However, a reliable source from the family who did not want his name mentioned, told our correspondent that the unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday night when many other residents had retired to their beds.

According to the source, “It was around 11:30 pm on Wednesday night when the sad incident took place. The gunmen, who came in their numbers, started shooting sporadically into the air to scare the residents of the area. The deseased did not get any assistance from the security agencies that was why the gunmen were able to murdered him.

“I am appealing to the police and other security agencies to as a matter of urgency to step up their security architecture so as to tackle the persistence kidnapping of citizens of the state.”

The report is coming on the heels after the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has raised alarm over high rate of kidnapping activities in communities across the 13 local government areas of the State.

The House, had directed Chairmen of the 13 Local Government Areas of the State to collaborate with traditional rulers and security agencies to organize security summit to find lasting solutions to the menace.

Mr. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House stated this while reading the House resolution on a matter of Public Interest raised by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Muhammad Adamu-Oyanki on the growing issue of kidnapping in the State during the House proceedings in Lafia, the state capital on Monday this week.

Speaker Jatau appreciated the mover of the motion and all Honourable Members for their positive contributions on the issue.

“The resolution of the House is to the effect that we commend His Excellency, Engr. A A Sule and security agencies for their efforts in tackling insecurity in the state.

“We urge the security agencies to be more committed and restrategize to tackle kidnapping in the state.

“The Kidnapping law passed by the Nasarawa State House of Assembly be strictly obeyed and anyone found wanting be dealt with accordingly,” he said

“All Local Government Chairmen should collaborate with traditional rulers and security agencies in their domain to summon security summit within two weeks to find lasting solutions to the issue of kidnapping in the state.

The Speaker also called on the people of the state to join hands with the security agents in tackling kidnapping and other criminal acts in the state

He also urged the people of the state to help security agencies with useful information that will curtail crimes in the state.

Earlier, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Muhammad Oyanki said that the issue of forceful abduction and kidnapping has becoming alarming in his constituency.

“Mr Speaker and my Honourable colleagues, issue of forceful abduction and kidnapping is a thing of concern in my constituency.

“Kidnapping has become a serious problem in my constituency, every day and night, people have been kidnapped

“We must find solution to the incessant kidnapping in the state in order to save the lives of our people,” he added.

“In my constituency, a Councillor and many people were kidnapped, Please let’s find solution to this issue” he said.

The Deputy Speaker called on his colleagues to support his motion for the peace and development of the state.

Contributing, Mr. Luka Iliya Zhekaba, Mr. Suleiman Yakubu Azara, Mr. Jacob Ajegana, Mr. Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, Mr. Barr. Esson Mairiga, Mr. Musa Abubakar, Mr. Solomon Akwashiki, Mr. Onarigu Kana, Mr. Muhammed Adamu Omadefu and Mr. Dr. Ibrahim Peter Akwe urged the security agencies to be more committed to their duties in order to protect lives and property.

They said that people of their various constituencies cannot longer sleep with their two eyes closed.

They also urged security agencies to adopt modern technology to combat kidnapping and other crimes in the state

However, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa State Command, DSP. Ramhan Nansel could not be reached as at the time of filling in this report as several calls to his mobile lines were busy.
