I left N30.9bn to Anambra Government, says former Anambra Internal Revenue Service boss

Former Executive Chairman of Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), Dr. David Nzekwu, on Thursday, said he left N30.9billion with the State government as of the end of December 2021.
According to him, he took the figure position of N17billion when he assumed office in March 2018 and at the end of December 2021 the figure rise to 30.9billion, showing a difference of 13.9billion naira, he rise for Anambra State under former Governor Willie Obiano’s administration.
Former Executive Chairman, who disclosed this to Journalists, during a handover press conference at the State Revenue House, along Enugu-Onitsha expressway Awka, explain that he could achieve this through the establishment of Anambra State Social Service Identification of Number (ASSSIN), a technological means of collecting taxes from taxpayers in the State.
Dr. Nzekwu said about a 1.2million people are currently trading in Anambra State.
The IGR Boss said during his administration, he ensure that the number of taxpayers that was then eleven thousand increased to five hundred and ten thousand.
He also accounts that the office under his watch deployed Community officers across the 181 Communities to generate revenue from the local markets and cottage industries to the State purse.
While commending Governor Chukwuma Soludo, for banning the further collection of revenue in the State, Dr. Nzekwu, advised the new Executive Chairman to focus more on property taxation, noting that if properly handled, it will generate 15billion per annum.
Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has purported that he met only N300 million and over 100 billion debt in the State’s treasury when he assumed office.
He revealed this while answering questions on Arise TV on Tuesday.
According to him, he has inherited debts running into “hundreds of billions of naira” from his predecessor, Chief Willie Obiano, according to audited accounts.
The newly appointed Executive Chairman of the State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), is Mr. Nwora Madiebo.
