The Anambra State Police Command has announced the implementation of stricter identification protocols for security personnel across the State.
This move follows rising concerns over the misuse of Police and other security uniforms by unauthorized individuals.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, revealed the new measures in a statement issued on Tuesday through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu.
According to the Command, recent security reviews showed that some individuals have been illegally wearing uniforms belonging to security agencies to commit crimes, intimidate residents, and avoid lawful checks. The Police described the trend as dangerous and a growing threat to public safety.
CP Orutugu stated that the new directives aim to ensure that only legitimate security operatives are easily identifiable during operations, and to eliminate impersonation entirely.
He warned that anyone found wearing, selling, or using Police or other security uniforms including kits and accessories without proper authorization will be arrested and prosecuted.
He stressed that all security uniforms are classified government property, and unauthorized possession or use constitutes a serious criminal offense.
As part of the enforcement effort, the Commissioner ordered Divisional Police Officers, tactical squads, and patrol teams to intensify visibility policing and conduct thorough identity verification for all operatives encountered during duties.
The Command also urged residents to stay vigilant and report individuals suspected of impersonating security personnel. To support public cooperation, the Police provided emergency hotlines for reporting credible security information:
Control Room: 07039194332
PPRO: 08039334002
In conclusion, the Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring the public that it will continue to clamp down on criminals disguising themselves as security agents.
