In the world, there exist many forms of power, each of which plays a unique role in shaping society. These powers come in various shapes, such as traditional authority, religious leadership, economic power, and of course, political power. Among them, traditional rulers wield power that upholds cultural heritage and brings unity within communities. Religious leaders have the power to guide spiritual lives, promoting peace and faith. Economic power holds sway over markets and resources, shaping livelihoods. Yet, none of these powers are as contested and impactful as political power.
Political power, especially at the level of a state governor, holds unmatched significance. The position grants the authority to influence policies, make vital decisions, and allocate resources that affect every aspect of the state’s development. It’s no wonder that in every election cycle, the battle for the governor’s seat becomes so intense. It is a power that many covet because of its potential to bring about meaningful change and improvement for the people. However, the ultimate source of power remains divine, with God’s power being the highest and most supreme, beyond the grasp of any human or earthly leader.
In Nasarawa State, the fight for political power is not merely about personal ambition; it is deeply rooted in the quest for justice, fair play, and equal opportunity. The state has been strategically divided into three senatorial zones, and rotation of political power has been a longstanding tradition. This ensures that every region of the state gets the opportunity to produce a governor, thereby fostering inclusiveness and harmony. To disrupt this rotation and allow one zone to dominate the governorship position would be to undermine natural justice, and it would destabilize the delicate balance that has kept the state unified.
As the people of Nasarawa State look ahead to the 2027 gubernatorial election, the Western zone is right to demand its turn for the governor’s seat. Since the inception of the state, each of the three zones—Western, Northern, and Southern—has had a shot at governance. To deny the Western zone the opportunity now would create a deep sense of injustice and could sow division, leading to a potential political crisis in the future. The consequences of not adhering to the principle of rotational power are far-reaching and could negatively affect the unity and peace that Nasarawa State has worked so hard to preserve. Here are the 13 points on why altering this pattern of power rotation could bring harm:
- Political Instability: Ignoring zoning principles could lead to protests, dissatisfaction, and political unrest.
- Loss of Trust in Leadership: If one zone is sidelined, it would create mistrust among the people, with the feeling that their rights have been disregarded.
- Erosion of Democratic Values: Failing to uphold zoning would set a dangerous precedent, undermining the democratic process.
- Heightened Tensions Between Zones: Political rivalry could escalate into tensions, dividing the people of Nasarawa State along regional lines.
- Fragmented Political Parties: Political parties would struggle to unify, as each zone would vie for its share of power, weakening political cohesion.
- Loss of Fair Play: The principle of fairness would be lost, making future elections more contentious.
- Disillusionment of the Electorate: People may begin to feel that elections no longer matter, which could lead to voter apathy.
- Social Division: Regionalism could grow, creating societal divisions that are difficult to mend.
- Increased Corruption: Discontent over unfair political practices can breed corruption, as people might feel the system is rigged.
- Economic Disparity: Unequal political representation can lead to uneven distribution of resources, neglecting certain areas.
- Threat to Peace: The delicate peace in Nasarawa could be threatened if the people feel their rightful turn is being denied.
- Loss of Legitimacy for Future Governors: A governor who comes to power under such a system would struggle with legitimacy.
- Endangering State Unity: The state’s unity would be at risk, creating a climate where regional tensions spill over into violence.
With these dire consequences in mind, it is essential that the Western zone’s call for the governorship seat in 2027 be recognized and respected. The leadership of the state must rise to the occasion and ensure that the rotation of power continues, maintaining the delicate balance that has kept Nasarawa strong.
However, while the Western zone deserves the opportunity to produce the next governor, it is equally important that the right candidate be chosen to lead the state forward. Nasarawa needs a leader who has the qualifications, the experience, and the capacity to unite the people and propel the state to greater heights. The candidate that best fits these criteria is Distinguished Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu.
Senator Wadada is no stranger to the political landscape of Nasarawa State. He has an impressive track record in leadership, both within the state and on the national stage. His experience spans various roles, from being a senator to holding other high-profile positions, all of which have given him a deep understanding of governance and the needs of the people. His leadership is marked by integrity, wisdom, and a commitment to public service.
Here are five reasons why Senator Ahmed Wadada is the most capable candidate for the governor’s seat:
- Proven Leadership Record: Senator Wadada has consistently demonstrated his leadership abilities. His time in office has been marked by effective decision-making, transparency, and the successful execution of projects that benefit the people of Nasarawa State.
- Strong Grassroots Support: Senator Wadada has built a strong network of support across Nasarawa. He is known and loved by the people, with deep connections to every community. This widespread support makes him a candidate who can unite the state and not just represent one region or interest group.
- Youth and Women Empowerment: Senator Wadada understands the importance of empowering the youth and women, who make up a significant portion of the electorate. His policies and actions have always focused on creating opportunities for these groups to thrive, which will continue as governor.
- Experience in National Governance: His experience as a senator has given him the opportunity to work on national issues, building relationships with key figures and agencies that will benefit Nasarawa State. He understands the intricacies of federal-state relations and can leverage this for the state’s development.
- Commitment to Development: Above all, Senator Wadada is a man of action. His vision for Nasarawa is one of progress, where all regions are given the resources and opportunities they need to flourish. His leadership would focus on job creation, infrastructural development, education, and healthcare—all critical issues that Nasarawa faces today.
As Governor Abdullahi Sule continues to stand firm on the issue of zoning, he will be remembered as a leader who upheld democratic values and worked tirelessly to ensure fairness and unity within the state. His commitment to the rotation of power will be seen as a testament to his legacy as a true democrat.
In the same vein, the first civilian governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, should be commended for his foresight in advocating for the rotation of power. His statement that it is now the turn of the Western zone speaks to his wisdom and understanding of what is right for the state. Leaders from the Southern and Northern zones must also follow this example, speaking up for justice and fairness, rather than remaining silent in the face of injustice.
As the people of Nasarawa look towards the future, it is clear that unity and justice must prevail in the 2027 gubernatorial election. The right candidate—Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu—must be chosen to lead the state forward. His qualifications, experience, and commitment to the people make him the best choice for governor. With him at the helm, Nasarawa can continue on its path of progress, prosperity, and unity.
Now, more than ever, the people of Nasarawa must stand together to ensure that the right steps are taken for a brighter future. Let us all support the call for power rotation and the emergence of a leader who will serve the people selflessly and effectively. The time is now for Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu to lead Nasarawa into a new era of growth and development.
