The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Gombe State has said the increase in rape among women is alarming including cases of minors.
Gombe State Coordinator of National Human Rights Commission, Barrister Mohammed S. Ayuba made this known in an interview with our correspondent in Gombe on Friday.
While emphasising some challeges among women concerning rape, he said something urgent have to be done to ensure a rape-free society.
He said there is need to carry out sensitization campaign to enlighten the public on how to combat the menace of rape among women.
According to him, it is sad to report that minors are being raped too.
Barrister Ayuba called on the traditional rulers and religious leaders to preach peace to the people by telling them to turn to God than engaging themselves in rape activities.
He said so far 27 rape cases have been reported to Human Rights Commission and that the conmission has already forwarded the cases to the proper authority for prosecution.
The coordinator lamented that government should not relent in punishing the offenders if found wanting.
He also advised government to enact a law inorder to prosecute offenders of rape activities so that would serve as deterrent to others.
Parents who are custodians should monitor the behavior of their children to avoid them being raped.
