Senator Ademola Adeleke wins Osun governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday morning declared
candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the Osun Governorship election.

Adeleke secured the highest number of votes in the Saturday election, polling a total 403, 371 votes to defeat incumbent Governor Adeboyega Oyetola, who scored 371,027.

INEC Returning Officer, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, declared Adeleke winner at the end of the collation of the election results.

Results announced earlier at the Collation Centre in Osogbo indicated that Adeleke won in 17 Local Government Areas while, his closest rival, incumbent Governor Oyetola, secured victory in 13 LGAs.

The electoral commission had earlier assured Nigerians that the election would not be declared inconclusive.

INEC Supervising National Commissioner, Prof Kunle Ajayi, gave the assurance shortly after protesters stormed the Commission’s office to demand conclusion of the exercise on first ballot.

Although the protesters couldn’t gain access to the collation centre, they threatened to resist any rerun.

In 2018, the election went into a rerun when Oyetola and Adeleke, the two leading candidates in this election, went head to head. Oyetola eventually won the rerun. (firstnewsonline.ng)
