The Director-General of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Dr. Nteranya Sanginga is among foreign recipients to receive this year’s Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, one of the highest orders awarded in the name of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.
The recognition is due to his contributions to strengthening relations and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and sub-Saharan Africa in the field of agriculture.
A statement from the Embassy of Japan in Abuja, explained that Dr. Sanginga, a national of the Democratic Republic of Congo, at IITA located in Ibadan, Nigeria, has contributed greatly to promoting bilateral cooperation in the field of agriculture by encouraging the inauguration of a Japanese researcher as its chairman, and training several Japanese researchers in related areas.
According to the statement, based on his research philosophy, IITA co-developed technologies for contributions to Japanese companies expanding their businesses into Africa.
Besides, IITA provided technical cooperation of tropical agriculture to Sasakawa Africa Association and promoted academic research collaborations with Japanese universities.
It said, in addition, Dr. Sanginga contributed to strengthening of relations between Japan and Africa through presenting the research results related to agriculture and food domain at TICADVI and TICAD7.
The statement pointed out the he left his significant mark on achievements toward Japan in every aspect of industry, government, and academia by making efforts in building good relationships between Japan and Africa.
The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star is one of the orders under the Order of the Rising Sun, established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji.
The Order of the Rising Sun was the first national decoration awarded by the Government of Japan.
The badge features rays of sunlight from the rising sun and awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.
