International Workers’ Day 2025: Abuja chamber of commerce celebrates Nigerian workers, advocates for social justice, decent work

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) joins the global community in commemorating the 2025 International Workers’ Day, celebrating the resilience, dedication, and contributions of Nigerian workers to national development and economic growth.

Observed annually on May 1st, International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, honours the role of workers and labour movements in shaping equitable societies.

This year’s global theme, “Social Justice and Decent Work,” underscores the urgent need to create inclusive, fair, and safe work environments that protect the rights and dignity of all workers.

In his message to mark the occasion, ACCI President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, PhD, lauded Nigerian workers for their unwavering commitment, enterprise, and resilience in the face of economic and structural challenges. He described them as the backbone of national progress and pillars of family stability.

“Today is a celebration of the hardworking and dedicated individuals who keep our economy running. Nigerian workers have remained steadfast, contributing not only to the growth of their families but to the advancement of our nation. Their never-dying spirit and work ethic reflect the strength of our people,” Chief Obegolu stated.

He further emphasized that workers extend beyond the formal sector, encompassing artisans, entrepreneurs, and those in the informal economy who strive daily to earn a legitimate living and contribute meaningfully to society.

Chief Obegolu urged the government at all levels to implement policies that promote decent work, equitable wages, and safe working conditions, noting that worker welfare is critical to sustainable economic development.

“As a Chamber that represents the interests of the business community, we believe that productivity thrives in an environment where workers are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. We therefore advocate for robust labour policies that bridge the gap between legislative intentions and real workplace realities, particularly in the informal sector,” he added.

Highlighting the 2025 theme, he stressed that social justice and economic growth must go hand-in-hand, ensuring that all Nigerians have access to opportunities for decent employment and fair treatment in the workplace.

Chief Obegolu also extended warm wishes to all Nigerian workers, especially staff of the ACCI and the broader Nigerian Chamber movement, acknowledging their dedication and invaluable service to the nation’s economic advancement.

“On behalf of the Executive Council and members of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I wish all workers a happy and fulfilling International Workers’ Day. Your efforts power the engine of our economy, and today we celebrate your achievements.”
