IWD: NAWOJ calls for speedy passage of gender-based bills

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Niger Chapter, on Tuesday called on the State House of Assembly to ensure speedy passage of gender-based bills, to enhance women’s rights and development.

This is contained in a statement jointly signed by Hajiya Rabi Bello and Mrs Rita Durumi, State Chairperson and Secretary of the association to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD) in Minna on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that IWD is a global celebration to highlight the achievements of women championing economic, cultural, political, and social causes globally.

The statement noted that the passage of the bills would give more opportunities for women in political parties, governance and the society.

“Women are special beings, they are strong and they have rights which should be protected.

“They need enabling environment to help them contribute to the nation’s development,” the statement said.

It also noted that the struggle by women for equity and equality was a just cause that must be critically considered by governments at all levels as well as lawmakers.

According to the statement, the bill would give more support for a large number of women to be elected at the upcoming elections.

It called on all hands to be on deck to champion the fight against all forms of discrimination against women in the country.

NAN reports that the theme of the 2022 celebration  is “Gender Equality today for Sustainable Tomorrow”. (NAN)
