Japan announces Professor Gambari recepient of Imperial award

Diplomat and Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, Professor Ibrahim Gambari has been conferred with the Imperial Decoration awarded in the name of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.
In a statement from the Japan Embassy in Abuja, the conferment was announced on November 3, 2023 by the Government of Japan announced for foreign recipients of the 2023 Autumn Imperial Decorations.
The statement said Professor Gambari was recognized for his contributions at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Japan.
Professor Gambari will receive The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, one of the highest orders awarded in the name of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.
According to the statement, in his role as Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, Professor Gambari attended TICAD-8 in Tunisia in 2019, representing Nigeria.
It noted that by thinking highly of and promoting the TICAD process, Professor Gambari has contributed to the improvement of Japan’s presence in Africa and actively worked with relevant ministers to address the problems faced by Japanese companies stationed in Nigeria and worked hard to resolve them.
“As the UN Under-Secretary-General, he attended TICAD-3 in 2003 with Ms. Ogata Sadako, the co-chairperson of UN Human Security Commission and actively participated in and contributed to the TICAD process from the position of a UN official,” it said.
The statement also pointed out that Professor Gambari strongly argued that the UN should cooperate with G4 (Japan, Germany, India, and Brazil), which is promoting the UN Security Council reform and left a legacy of great contributions to Japan in a wide range of fields.These include working to build a cooperative relationship with G4, including Japan.
