The Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation has praised Jigawa State for its commitment to the Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project. Engineer Hauwa Mohammed Sadiq, Deputy Director of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Systems, led a delegation to the Government House to assess the state’s readiness for the project.
Jigawa State ranked second among all states in terms of preparedness, meeting the necessary requirements for the World Bank-supported program aimed at enhancing irrigation and power infrastructure in Nigeria ¹. The successful inspection of the Galala Dam revealed over 2,000 hectares of land suitable for irrigation.
Key Components of the SPIN Project:
- Irrigation Modernization: Upgrading existing irrigation systems
- Dam Rehabilitation: Restoring dams to improve water storage and supply
- Hydropower Expansion: Developing dams with hydropower potential
- Water Users Association Capacity Building: Empowering local communities to manage irrigation infrastructure
Governor Mallam Umar Namadi emphasized Jigawa’s focus on irrigation to address flooding issues and expand agricultural production. “The SPIN project comes at a critical time for Jigawa as we shift our focus to irrigation farming,” he said ¹. With agriculture contributing 47% to Jigawa’s GDP and employing over 85% of the state’s population, this project is crucial for the state’s prosperity.
The SPIN project is set to commence on January 1, 2025. Jigawa State is committed to enhancing its preparedness and partnering with the Federal Ministry to maximize the benefits of this initiative.
