Kaduna residents clear abandoned Cemetery Road, seek government intervention

By Ahmad A. Usman, Kafanchan

Hundreds of youths in Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, at the weekend mobilised to clear the Kafanchan–Zauru road, which links to the town’s Muslim graveyard.

Armed with cutlasses, hoes, diggers, and shovels, the youths volunteered their labour to make the road passable, saying the bad condition had made it difficult for families to convey their dead to the cemetery, especially during the rainy season.

Their work included digging and expanding gutters and waterways along the stretch, aimed at reducing flooding and preventing further damage to the road.

Speaking with our correspondent during the exercise, the Chairman of Kafanchan Youth Forum, Engr. Sa’adu Bako, explained that the voluntary work was to ease immediate challenges faced by residents. He, however, appealed to both the local and state government to construct the abandoned road.

“The road does not only lead to the Muslim cemetery but also serves as a link between Kafanchan and several farming communities such as Zauru and Kurdan. Fixing it will not only ease burial processions but also boost economic activities in the area,” he said.

Bako urged Governor Uba Sani to consider the plight of Kafanchan residents while awarding road contracts across the state. He said attending to the Kafanchan–Zauru road would demonstrate the government’s commitment to equitable development.

He commended the youths who participated in the clearing exercise and appreciated individuals who supported them with cash and kind to ensure the success of the work.

Residents who spoke to our correspondent also called on government authorities to considered the abandoned Kafanchan township roads as its prioritise rural road construction, noting that most communities within and around Kafanchan are agrarian and depend on accessible roads to transport their farm produce.
